The men's basketball team from Terre Haute, Indiana's Indiana State University, known as the Indiana State Sycamores, competes in the NCAA Division I level. The Missouri Valley Conference is where they play their current home games. It wasn't until 2011 that the squad returned to the men's basketball NCAA Division I tournament. Although the records from 1896 to 1899 are no longer preserved, the Sycamores were one of the first NCAA basketball teams, joining Bucknell, Minnesota, Washington, and Yale in their inaugural season in 1896. The Sycamores have a roster that includes two AP Scholars, fourteen All-Americans, forty-one players with 1,000 point totals, and 1,560+ wins.

As a bonus, the Sycamores have participated in 27 playoff events (7 NCAA, 4 NIT, 2 CBI, 1 CIT, 12 NAIA, and the 1936 Olympic Trials) and have made it to five national championship games (2 NCAA, 3 NAIA). The 1951 Pan-American Games gold medal-winning team included seven sycamores. Larry Bird named the Sycamores' most outstanding player that season, guided an unbeaten squad to its first-ever entry in the NCAA Division I Tournament and the AP and UPI national titles in 1978–79. 

Aside from winning the NAIA national championship in 1950 and making it to the NAIA Finals in 1946 and 1948, as well as the NAIA National Semifinals in 1949 and 1953, the Sycamores finished second in the 1968 NCAA College Division (now Division II) national tournament. The Sycamores have been captained by All-Americans such as Duane Klueh, Dick Atha, Lenny Rzeszewski, Butch Wade, and Jerry Newsom throughout the years.
