Hubby Jenkins is an accomplished musician who plays various instruments and performs traditional American music to educate others about it. Although he was reared in Brooklyn, he sought out his Southern heritage by exploring the connections between country blues, ragtime, fiddle and banjo, and traditional jazz. For Jenkins, busking was the first step in a long and fruitful career as a musician.
On the streets and subways of New York City, he honed his guitar and singing skills while playing covers of songs by the legendary musicians whose work he was devouring. He was an ambitious itinerant musician who performed in the streets, coffee shops, bars, and house gatherings of various U.S. towns.
Jenkins, who had made a reputation for himself by busking across the country for a while, eventually met the Carolina Chocolate Drops. He played a significant role in the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops (from 2010 to 2016) and in Rhiannon Giddens' ensemble. The dynamic solo performances he gives today allow him to share his passion for traditional American music and his deep understanding of its past.
