Men's collegiate basketball seasons typically conclude with the annual Horizon League Conference Tournament. Since its inception in 1980, the competition has taken place annually. The champion of the Horizon League Tournament earns automatic entry from the league to NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The tournament's championship game is usually played before the group for the NCAA tournament is revealed.
Until 2002, every round of the competition occurred at the same location. The higher-seeded club always hosted the first-round match from 2003 through 2015. The regular season title winner got to host the quarterfinals and semis. For the championship game, the highest remaining seed was allowed to host.
The winner and runner-up of the regular season were given a double-bye into the semi-finals under this system. The regular season winner also got to host the quarterfinals and, if it won, the final. The Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, was the site of the Horizon League championship for its first three years (2016-2018) and the site of the women's championship (2017-2019).
