Hailu Mergia Information
Hailu Mergia is an Ethiopian keyboardist. Originally from the Shewa Province of the Ethiopian Empire, Hailu Mergia migrated to Addis Abeba when he was ten. At 14, he trained himself to play the accordion after a lifetime of listening to traditional Oromo, Amhara, and Tigrinya songbook music. The accordion, keyboard, and ability to "re-purpose folk songs into funkier modern melodies" set him apart as a major contributor to Ethiopian pop music.
In the 1970s, Hailu Mergia was the keyboardist for the Walias Band, a jazz and funk outfit whose sound was heavily influenced by the strong polyrhythmic funk of Western musicians like King Curtis, Junior Walker, and Maceo Parker. After Mengistu's Derg regime shut down the nightlife in Addis Ababa, it became more difficult for working bands in the region to make a livelihood. Despite this, music was still regularly recorded, and cassettes were the normal release type because they were simple to replicate and disseminate.
Walias Band performed in the Hilton Hotel in Addis for ten years during this time. After settling in the United States for some time, Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument was released in 1985. At the time, he was performing with the Zula Band.
