Gyptian Information
Windel Beneto Edwards (October 25, 1983) is a Jamaican reggae singer, professionally known by his stage name, Gyptian. He is frequently seen performing roots reggae tunes within the reggae subgenre dancehall. Edwards, born to a Seventh-day Adventist mother, Pauline McCaulsky, and a Rastafarian father, began singing in the church when he was seven years old. He grew up in the King Weston District, a small town in Rural St. Andrew, Jamaica.
Mr. Wong helped Gyptian refine his sound, and Earl Chinna Smith and Gyptian won the 2004 Star Search talent competition at Kens Wild Flower Lounge in Portmore, giving them tickets to Sting 2004, branded the "best one-night reggae event on the planet."
The musician got his moniker by wearing a cloth around his head and pulling his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh. In 2005, he had two singles on the Seasons Riddim, "Is There A Place" and "Serious Times."
Gyptian has dominated the Jamaican charts with tunes such as "Is There a Place" and the chart-topping ballad "Mama, Don't Cry," for which she was nominated for Best New Entertainer at the International Reggae and World Music Awards in 2006.
Gyptian's debut album, My Name Is Gyptian, was released on VP Records on September 12, 2004. Gyptian shot the music video for his new single, "I Can Feel Your Pain" (Cloud Nine Riddim), directed by Rhona Fox, in New York City on December 12, 2007. I Can Feel Your Pain, his second album, was released in 2008.
