Grupo Niche Information
The salsa group Grupo Niche first appeared in 1978 in Colombia's capital, Bogotá. After success in Latin America, the band finally relocated to Cali, Colombia in 1982. Alexis Lozano and Jairo Varela were its founders. Varela was an integral part of the band for the rest of his life, contributing as a guiro player, vocalist, director, songwriter, and producer. Orquesta Guayacán was formed after trombonist and arranger Alexis Lozano departed.
Francisco Garcia "Porky" played bass, Jorge Bazán and Hector Viveros sang, and Luis Pacheco played congas. Nicolas Cristancho "Macabi" was the group's pianist. At a celebration honoring Colombia's independence (July 20), Grupo Niche performed in Montreal on July 21, 2001. That night, Grupo Niche was joined by Baltimore Estrada and his Nueva Sensacion, a band he created in the late '80s.
On July 15, 2006, Grupo Niche returned to Montreal for the Festival Colombiano. In October 2008, they performed again, and on May 8, 2010, they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a concert. If you believe Hola Calgary, a Latin site, Grupo Niche performed in Calgary, Alberta's Jack Singer Concert Hall at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts on October 11, 2008.
