One of Michigan's few professional ballet companies is based in the state's second-largest city. The Grand Rapids Ballet has been performing in this mid-sized Midwestern city for nearly 50 years, bringing the world of dance to it in fresh and imaginative ways year after year. The Grand Rapids Ballet has a long and illustrious history, and the 2021-2022 season marked its 50th anniversary. The Grand Rapids Civic Ballet was founded in 1972 by founding Artistic Director Sally Seven. The company later combined with the Summerfest School of Grand Rapids, a professional dancers' group. They merged to become the GR Ballet, which began contracting performers in the 1990s.
The organization obtained a permanent home for the practice space and educational facilities in downtown Grand Rapids in 2000. They expanded again in September 2006, when the Peter Martin Wege Theatre, a new structure adjacent to the first, opened. In a LEED-certified space, this performance area has 300 seats. The Meijer-Royce Center for Dance is the name given to the two buildings when they are combined.
