Goh Ballet Academy Information
Goh Ballet Academy is a traditional ballet school in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was established in 1978 by Chan-hon Goh and Lin Yee Goh. Following their 1978 migration from China to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Choo Chiat and Lin Yee Goh established the Goh Ballet Academy.
Choo Chiat Goh joined China's National Ballet in 1959 after receiving scholarship training at the Beijing Dance Academy and London's The Royal Ballet.
The current school director, Chan-hon Goh, is the daughter of the Gohs; she spent 20 years as a main dancer with the National Ballet of Canada. The Prix de Lausanne is an annual worldwide competition for young Swiss people with aspirations of a professional life, and Chan Hon Goh was one of its recipients.
Chan Hon Goh, the academy director, has instituted a master class series for aspiring dancers who want to hone their skills beyond what is taught in regular ballet classes. The series includes guest artists who mentor students and cover topics outside the syllabus.
The Goh Ballet has performed in several countries, including the US, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the People's Republic of China. At the Rencontres Internationales de la Danse Festival in La Baule, France, in 1994, the young company became the first Canadian organization to be invited to play. There were eight curtain calls throughout the performance at the festival.
