Glenn Miller Orchestra Information
Glenn Miller & His Orchestra is a band founded by American swing dancer Glenn Miller. The group, which had three saxophones providing harmony and a clarinet and tenor saxophone for melody, became the most famous and financially successful swing dance orchestra of the 1920s and a top act on the Billboard Hot 100. Ray Anthony will be the last remaining orchestra member as of 2023.
During the late 1920s, when hot jazz was popular in New York City, Miller started his professional recording career as a sideman. Once great trombonists Tommy Dorsey and Jack Teagarden arrived, Miller focused on honing his arranging abilities.
Miller honed his arranging skills by working in several contexts, during which time he wrote for established musicians and up-and-coming talents like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw.
Bluebird Records, a Victor subsidiary, signed Miller when he began working with Eli Oberstein. Miller became famous after performing at the Paradise Restaurant and the Frank Dailey–owned Meadowbrook and for their respective national broadcasts. In the summer of 1939, he became wildly popular at the Glen Island Casino.
Miller had few serious competitors between the end of 1939 and the middle of 1942, when they were the most popular band in the nation.
