The radio show is broadcast primarily from the Townsquare Media radio station WGRD-FM, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Free Beer and Hot Wings Show are syndicated throughout America and distributed by Compass Media Networks. The show also guest-hosted The Dan Patrick Show on several occasions.
The Free Beer and Hot Wings Show solicits the nomination by their listeners who belong to low-income families to be the Holiday Break-in recipients to provide holiday gifts. Once the selection is made, the participating radio affiliates bring holiday cheer. The show has earned the Michigan Association of Broadcasters award thrice, in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The Free Beer and Hot Wings Show also won the RadioContraband Rock Radio Award in 2013 and 2014. The award was presented for the category of “Syndicated Morning Show of the Year.”
The Free Beer and Hot Wings Show has faced a few controversies when the show’s producer, Joe Gassmann, was arrested in Naperville, Illinois, in early 2018 for two counts of domestic battery. However, Gassmann returned to the show near the end of May 2018, when the charges were eventually dropped.
