Four Bitchin Babes Information
The Four Bitchin' Babes are a rotating cast of female folk singer-songwriters who play mostly comedic or satirical tunes. Sally Fingerett, Christine Lavin, Deirdre Flint, and Debi Smith make up the current touring lineup. The group was started by Christine Lavin in 1990. She compiled the CD On a Winter's Night and toured with the musicians who appeared on it, including Patty Larkin, Megon McDonough, Sally Fingerett, and Lavin. After touring across the country, Lavin recorded the band's show at The Birchmere for a live album titled Buy Me, Bring Me, Take Me, Don't Mess My Hair, which was published by Rounder Records in 1990.
The band lost Larkin when she joined Windham Hill Records; Julie Gold, who wrote "From a Distance," replaced her. The band kept touring and releasing new music, including 1993's Buy Me... Volume II. Other musicians, including Cheryl Wheeler, Janis Ian, and Mary Travers, would fill in for absent band members at live performances. Debi Smith took over for Julie Gold in 1994, and by 1995, they had published their third album on Shanachie Records called Fax It, Charge It, Don't Ask Me What's For Dinner.
The band's live album Gabby Road: Out Of The Mouths Of Babes was recorded at the Birchmere in 1997, after Lavin had chosen Camille West as her replacement. The Babes: Beyond Bitchin', recorded and produced by Jeff Bova, was released in 2001 alongside a concert DVD.
