Fort Worth Opera Information
According to the company, the Fort Worth Opera is the oldest continuously performing opera company in Texas and one of the oldest in the United States. It switched to a "festival" style in 2007 after initially presenting operas one at a time throughout a fall/winter season. It currently plays three to four operas in Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth's downtown district each spring. Fort Worth Opera discontinued the Festival format after fourteen years in 2021, as the company celebrated its 75th anniversary season and returned to year-round programming.
Eloise MacDonald Snyder and Betty Spain, both former opera singers and pianist and composer Jeanne Axtell Walker, formed the Fort Worth Civic Opera Association, which is today known as Fort Worth Opera. The trio put on a full-scale Verdi's La Traviata production in seven months, which premiered on November 25, 1946, in the Fort Worth Stockyards' Cowtown Coliseum.
In 2021, the Fort Worth Opera announced its landmark 75th-anniversary season repertory, casting, and live performances, including the world premiere of composer-librettist Héctor Armienta's Zorro. After fourteen years of staging a nationally acclaimed Festival in the spring, the organization expanded its presence and visibility in the booming North Texas arts community by switching to a year-round structure in the 2021-2022 season.
