Festival of Dance Information
In 1982, Singaporeans were introduced to the art of dance at the Festival of Dance, which has since become an annual tradition. After the Singapore Festival of Arts and the Singapore Festival of Dance merged in 1999 to form the Singapore Arts Festival, the dance festival was absorbed into the larger Festival of Asian Performing Arts in 1993.
The National Theatre Trust (NTT) proposed establishing a dance festival in Singapore with the backing of the Ministry of Culture in response to the rising interest in dance among Singaporeans. The National Theatre of Thailand (NTT) announced in 1981 that it would hold Singapore's first dance festival in March 1982. The festival was organized to inspire new kinds of dance and to provide local choreographers, dancers, and musicians a chance to perform them.
The organizers of the Festival of Dance sought to broaden the event's appeal beyond its initial local audience by inviting international dance companies to perform in succeeding years. The Canadian Judith Marcuse Dance Company and the Hong Kong Han Ballet performed at John Wey Ling's Ballet Gala.
