Fatoumata Diawara Information
Fatoumata Diawara (1982) is a Malian actress, singer, and songwriter. As a teenager, she was sent back to their hometown of Bamako, Mali, to be reared by an aunt. Diawara relocated to France when she was eighteen to pursue her acting career. She traveled shortly back to Mali for a movie role before leaving again, this time to Paris, to avoid being forced into marriage by her family. Later, Diawara picked up the guitar and started writing her songs, fusing the Wassoulou traditions of southern Mali with other influences.
On Red Earth: A Malian Journey, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Oumou Sangaré, AfroCubism, and the Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou, to name a few, have all collaborated with Diawara on stage or in the studio. May 9, 2011, saw the release of the EP Kanou. Every song on her World Circuit Records debut album Fatou, released in September 2011, was written by her. In September 2012, Diawara was a featured artist in the "30 Songs / 30 Days" fundraising initiative for Half the Sky, a cross-platform media initiative based on the book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
In recent years, Diawara has been traveling the globe. At the 2013 Glastonbury Festival, she gave an important performance for an English-speaking audience. Her itinerary has also led her to South America, Asia, Australia, and numerous travels to the US. In September 2013, she played with The Roots in New York as part of the Clinton Global Initiative.
