Dayton Contemporary Dance Company Information
Dayton Contemporary Dance Company was established by Jeraldyne Blunden in 1968 to allow pupils of Jeraldyne's School of Dance to showcase their talents. Blunden recruited twelve female dancers from her school to join the dance group by 1972. Debbie Blunden-Diggs, Blunden's daughter and a future company artistic director, was one of the initial dancers.
By presenting Blunden's dance Flite at the Northeast Regional Dance Association Festival in 1973, the company became the first African-American ballet troupe to be accepted into that organization. Soon after its founding in 1974, the company staged its first major production in 1976, signifying the first time its dancers were compensated for their work. At Dayton's Memorial Hall, they played their composition with renowned composer Roy Meriwether, Black Snow, to a sold-out crowd.
Blunden established Dayton Contemporary Dance Company as a repertory company by consistently commissioning works from acclaimed foreign artists. Ulysses Dove and other young, aspiring choreographers helped build the repertoire of the expanding company. Works by world-renowned choreographers like Eleo Pomare, Alvin Ailey, Ulysses Dove, Merce Cunningham, Donald McKayle, Rennie Harris, and Talley Beatty can be found in DCDC's excellent repertoire.
