David Alan Grier Information
David Alan Grier is an American comedian and actor from Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Detroit’s magnet high school, Cass Tech, and later, from the University of Michigan, he earned a bachelor’s degree in TV, Radio, and Film. In 1981, Grier received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama. At a young age, Grier’s family marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in a March on Poverty. Soon after his graduation, he was offered Jackie Robinson’s role in The First, a Broadway musical directed by Martin Charnin.
In 1981, Grier stepped onto “National Public Radio” radio drama adaptation of Star Wars. He voiced the nameless X-wing fighter pilot. He also starred as James “Thunder” Early in one of the hit Broadway musicals, Dreamgirls. Some of his other notable appearances include the Negro Ensemble Company Production A Soldier’s Play and A Different World show.
Grier made his film debut in 1983, appearing in Streamers, directed by Robert Altman. Since then, he has worked in various hit films such as From the Hip, Amazon Women on the Moon, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, In the Army Now, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby. His notable TV appearances include CBS Summer Playhouse, In Living Color, The Preston Episodes, Happily Ever After, and Fairy Tales for Every Child.
Grier began doing stand-up comedy by hosting the hit Comedy Central series named Premium Blend. He was ranked on Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups and earned various awards for his outstanding performances.
