Author John Patrick Shanley wrote the drama Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Danny and Roberta, two damaged individuals, meet and chat in a pub. The production is a one-act play and centers around their story. The 1983 series premiere featured John Turturro and June Stein in the lead roles. The play has seen multiple revivals since its 2004 Off-Broadway debut at the Circle in the Square Theatre, and Jeff Ward directed it for a third staging in 2023.
The protagonists, Danny and Roberta, meet in a pub in the Bronx and quickly become entangled in a conversation. "He is an angry, depressed, and violent adolescent who has no use for logic;" she is a broken-hearted, guilt-ridden teen whose parents are taking care of him after his divorce. The play debuted in 1983 off-Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre; it is a two-person piece. June Stein and John Turturro originated the roles of Danny and Roberta, respectively, under the direction of Barnet Kellman.
Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theatre, the play was recreated in 2004 with Rosemarie DeWitt and Adam Rothenberg in the lead roles. The play was announced to be resurrected off-Broadway in 2023 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in a production by Jeff Ward and Sam Rockwell, starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott.
