Cornelio Vega Information
The name comes from the fact that in 1897 the French governor of New France, Louis de Buade de Frontenac, constructed Fort Frontenac on the location of modern-day Kingston. The first Frontenacs, coached by James T. Sutherland, won the first J. Ross Robertson Cup and the intermediate division of the Ontario Hockey Association championship in the 1898-99 season.
During the years leading up to World War I, the Kingston Frontenacs were an amateur ice hockey team that played in the OHA. The 1910-11 Frontenacs squad was victorious and hoisted the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Some of the past NHL greats who have played on this team include Alec Connell, Bill Cook, Allan Davidson, and Flat Walsh.
In addition, the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) fielded a senior division team from the 1910s through the 1940s. Several members of this team went on to have successful NHL careers, including Mickey Blake, Glen Brydson, Bill Cook, Gus Giesebrecht, Charles Stewart, Doug Stevenson, Carl Voss, and Flat Walsh. Some veterans formed an Ontario Veteran's Hockey League franchise amid the war. Members of this team include future NHL greats Hub Macey, Walt McCartney, Gus Marker, and Ed Nicholson.
