Conference USA Baseball Information
For the baseball season, C-USA crowns a winner at the annual Conference USA Tournament. The champion earns a berth in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championships. The current tournament format has a double-elimination tournament with eight teams, with the champions of each of the two brackets of four teams meeting in a best-of-one championship game. The Rice Owls have more tournament titles at seven than any other team.
From 1996 to 1999, the tournament format was a single-game play-in round followed by a double-elimination bracket with the top eight teams advancing. Whichever of the eight teams had the worst regular season conference record advanced to the play-in round. In 1996, when nine baseball-sponsoring schools were in the league, the eighth and ninth-place teams had to participate in a play-in round.
The best eight teams from the regular season started playing each other in a round-robin format in 2011. Two groups of four teams each made up the tournament competition. Pod 1 included the first, fourth, fifth, and eighth seeds, while Pod 2 had the second, third, sixth, and seventh seeds. Three preliminary games were played between each and the other two teams in its pod. Each pod's victor progressed to a championship match. 2014, the eight-team, double-elimination format employed from 1996 to 2009 was reinstated.
