The Men's basketball team representing the University of Colorado Boulder is the Colorado Buffaloes. This squad plays in the Pac-12 Conference, a division one NCAA tournament. Tad Boyle is their coach at the moment. Fourteen NCAA Tournaments have been played by the Buffaloes, with two trips to the Final Four (1942 and 1955). A total of nine National Invitation Tournaments have been played by Colorado, with the state taking first place in 1940, 1991, and 2011, all reaching the semifinals.

The Buffs' Big 8 Conference tournament record was 4-20. They had their finest season in 1990 when they upset Oklahoma in the conference finals after becoming the first no. 8 seed to do it. Even though they were on the losing side, Shaun Vandiver was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for their performance. The Buffaloes' record in conference tournament play during their fifteen years in the Big 12 was 9–15. 

Although they failed to secure a conference title, they may be proud of two notable accomplishments from their tenure. It all started in 2008 when the Buffs made history by defeating Baylor in the first round as the first no. 12 seed to defy a no. 5 seed. In their previous conference season, they defeated Iowa State in the first round, then defeated Kansas State for their third victory of the year. However, they were narrowly defeated in the semifinals by Kansas.
