The first race of the series was held in 2002, and it took place at Daytona International Speedway. Some of the previous names for this race, apart from Coca Cola Firecracker 250, are Stacker 2/GNC Live Well 250 (2002), Winn-Dixie 250 (2003), Winn-Dixie 250 presented by PepsiCo (2004–2007), Winn-Dixie 250 Powered by Coca-Cola (2008), Subway Jalapeño 250 (2009–2012), and Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola (2013–2016).
The first repeat winner who won the 2006 event was Dale Earnhardt Jr. and had the most wins of any driver at three. Most wins as a team were scored by Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Joe Gibbs Racing, and Richard Childress Racing (3). Most wins as a manufacturer were earned by Chevrolet (13).
The Wawa 250 Powered By Coca-Cola running of 2010 marked the first of four races for the Nationwide Series version of the Car of Tomorrow. Three other races were Richmond (September), Charlotte (October), and one at Michigan. Some of the race's notable events include the 2003 event where Dale Earnhardt Jr. led all 100 laps during his route to victory and the 2004 race in which all the cars ran a roof spoiler.
