Clue, which began as a cherished board game and later became a cult-great 1985 film, is now a stage play—and it's a comedy delivered out to spectators with homicidal relish. Based on Jonathan Lynn's 1980s film screenplay, the stage drama centers on six enigmatic people arriving for an evening of mystery at Boddy Manor under colorful pseudonyms. But much to the sadistic enjoyment of the crowd, things spiral out of hand as individuals start to die and secrets are exposed.
Adapting Clue for the stage seems a no-brainer since the film version is such a wonderful comedy. Its country home environment fits quite nicely with the likes of Noel Coward and Michael Frayn, and Lynn once said it was "screwball noir." Surprisingly, then, it wasn't suited for the stage until 2017.
Now launching in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre, this updated version of the show Clue is most likely not Broadway-bound, but that's more than OK since that is not the goal. It appears to be a piece designed specifically for local audiences, offering a welcoming starting place for those who aren't already frequent theatergoers.
