The Brazilian sertanejo combo Chitozinho & Xororó. Chitozinho is the stage name of Xororó of Durval de Lima and José Lima Sobrinho. Their blend of traditional Brazilian caipira with modern music laid the groundwork for the sertanejo style. Since their debut album's release in 1969, they have amassed sales of over 40 million copies. Their musician father taught Chitozinho and his brother Xororó music.
Under the moniker Irmoos Lima, they initially appeared at Brazilian carnivals. Their first TV appearance was on Silvio Santos' show in 1967, and they performed on Cidade Sertaneja the following year. They made their film debut in No Rancho Fundo the next year after the publication of their debut album in 1970. Throughout the '70s, their popularity and album sales skyrocketed, culminating in 1982 with selling over a million copies of Somos apaixonados.
Sertanejo music was first widely accepted by the urban middle and upper classes during their 1988 performance at the Palace. It was their debut TV special for SBT and featured Roberto Carlos. Their international fame grew as they performed in Las Vegas in 1989 and Miami with The Bee Gees in 1993. Their debut album in Spanish was released in 1991.
