For almost three decades, Alberto Lopez Herrera has been a leading figure in Mexican folk dance and storytelling as a choreographer, costume designer and maker, and teaching artist. Calpulli Mexican Dance Company's folk repertoire will be expanded, and new works will be developed with international themes. Mr. Lopez hopes that through Calpulli Community, he will be able to pass on his expertise in Mexican dance culture to the next generation.
Mr. Lopez, a native of San Antonio Chiltepec in the Puebla region, started learning Mexican folklore dance at the Centro Escolar Benito Juarez de Acatlán de Osorio when he was 12 years old. Concurrently, he was learning how to sew, a talent that would eventually complement his commitment to dance.
In New York, he attended the National Dance Institute's Teaching Artist program and graduated. Mr. Lopez worked with notable choreographers like Francisco Nevarez, Daniel Jaquez, and Noemy Hernandez while performing in the United States with the likes of the Grupo Folklórico de Greatneck, the Don Juan Dancers, and the Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York.
