Bombino Information
Omara "Bombino" Moctar (1980) is a Nigerian Tuareg singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was born in Tidene, Niger. The Ifoghas clan, to which he belongs, is part of the Kel Air Tuareg confederation. Bombino, his father, and his grandmother were all displaced from their home in 1990 when the Tuareg Rebellion broke out. They ended up seeking refuge in nearby Algeria. Around this time, Bombino picked up the guitar, having learned to play after a visiting cousin left it behind.
Later, he learned the Tuareg guitar from master musician Haja Bebe. The Italian word "bambino," meaning "little child," is the inspiration for Bebe's band moniker for him. Bombino and his electric ensemble Group Bombino were captured on film by filmmaker Hisham Mayet in 2007 at a wedding. One side of the 2009 vinyl release of Group Bombino - Guitars from Agadez, vol. 2, by Sublime Frequencies, features this performance.
Acoustic performances in the "dry guitar" manner can be found on the album's first side. As 2007 progressed, tensions in Niger increased, eventually leading to another Tuareg Rebellion. After that, Bombino became a member of Tidawt, led by Nigerien musician Hasso Akotey, which took him to North America for the first time when the band was invited to play at the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts as part of an exhibition of Tuareg art.
