Robert Hunter Caldwell (August 15, 1951) is an American musician and singer-songwriter from New York City. Born in Manhattan, he grew up in Miami with his mother, a real estate agent who had reggae singer Bob Marley as one of her clients. Soon he became friends with Caldwell and exposed him to a wide genre of music such as Latin, Haitian, R&B. Caldwell grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra's music. He began playing the piano and guitar at 12. When he turned 17, Caldwell started to play with his band in Las Vegas and later moved to Los Angeles.
During the initial years of his career, Caldwell was a member of Katmandu, a Miami band. He wrote music for the group while also performing. TK Records was the first label he signed to in Miami. "What You Won't Do for Love" was his first big hit song that reached the top 10 on the Billboard Magazine Pop and Adult Contemporary charts. The single has been sampled, remade, and covered various times. It was also covered during the fifth season of American Idol in 2006 by Elliott Yamin.
Caldwell released his self-titled debut album in 1978. The album earned double-platinum certification in the US and a single one in Japan. It was followed by another hit entitled Cat in the Hat in 1980. The second album earned Gold certification in the US. Some of his other notable albums are August Moon, Where Is Love, and Come Rain or Shine.
