Black Umfolosi Information
Black Umfolosi is a self-taught Acapella (Imbube) singing and traditional dance ensemble established in 1982 by members of school age at the time who desired to improve themselves both personally and professionally while also making a positive contribution to their community. Imbube music, gumboot dance, and Zulu dance are the areas of expertise of Black Umfolosi, who has performed widely across the country and abroad, including in Europe, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and Asia.
The international events they have represented Zimbabwe at are Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain, and the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, in 1994. With the help of The Community Black Umfolosi, they quickly realized the need to travel to different communities to observe and gain knowledge about various customs.
Subsequently, they made it their purpose to exhibit and educate people around the world, including those from other African nations, about Southern African traditional dance and music. The organization, first known as Black Umfolosi, eventually evolved into the Black Umfolosi Performing Arts Project, which resulted in the purchase of property and the establishment of an art museum.
