Ballet Hispanico Information
Ballet Hispánico is a dance company that is based in Manhattan, New York, hosting six dance studios. The company was founded by the choreographer and Puerto Rican/Mexican-American dancer Tina Ramirez in 1970. It represents dances reflecting the experience of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Ballet Hispánico has successfully performed for over two million people in the United States, South America, and Europe. It has a repertoire of over 75 works and has commissioned nearly 80 works, acquired 11 others, and worked with 45 choreographers from around the world.
The company welcomed Eduardo Vilaro as an Artistic Director in August 2009. The vision of the founder behind Ballet Hispánico Company was to give contemporary Hispanic culture its place in American dance. Ramirez invited 50 choreographers from diverse backgrounds to provide a modern-day interpretation of Spanish-speaking cultures. Several world-renowned artists responded to her vision, such as Vicente Nebrada and Alberto Alonso, along with Anna Sokolow from modern dance, Graciela Daniele, and Ann Reinking from Broadway, and Paco Fernandez and Jose Coronado from ethnic dance.
Tina Ramirez is famous for giving exposure to fresh talent and nurturing artists early in their careers. Contributors include MacArthur Award-Winner Susan Marshall, William Whitener, now Artistic Director of Kansas City Ballet, Ramon Oller, head of Spain's Metros Danza, and many more.
