Audra McDonald Information
Audra Ann McDonald (July 3, 1970) is an American singer and actress. She was born in West Berlin, West Germany. In just five years, at the age of 28, McDonald had won three Tony Awards for her roles in Carousel, Master Class, and Ragtime, putting her in the company of Shirley Booth, Gwen Verdon, and Zero Mostel.
Broadway welcomed McDonald in 2016 for a new musical based on the making of the 1921 musical Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, in which she appeared as vaudeville performer Lottie Gee.
At Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, New York, in May 2000, Audra McDonald was seen as "The Beggar Woman" in Lonny Price's concert adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The show also featured George Hearn and Patti LuPone.
She returned to the part for a few performances of Price's March 2014 Lincoln Center concert production, co-starring with Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson. The three-concert "Audra McDonald Sings Broadway" took place in November 2015 at the Sydney Opera House, featuring performances by Kate Miller-Heidke's "The Facebook Song," among other songs. McDonald will appear as a guest narrator at Walt Disney World's Candlelight Processional in December 2023.
