Arlo Davy Guthrie is a folk singer-songwriter, actor, social activist, and humanitarian from Brooklyn, New York City. His music is defined as folk, folk-rock, talking blues, and protest music. Guthrie was born in Coney Island, as the son of folk singer and composer Woody Guthrie and dancer Marjorie Mazia Guthrie. Nora Guthrie is his sister and is also involved in the music industry as a record producer. Guthrie attended Woodward School in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and graduated from the Stockbridge School, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He briefly attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings and received an honorary doctorate from Siena College in 1981.
Guthrie is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice and storytelling while he performs songs. To date, his best-known work is his debut piece, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree." It is a satirical talking blues song that has since become a Thanksgiving anthem. He delivered a performance at the Newport Folk Festival on July 17, 1967, which was very well received. He has also played in numerous venues, including Woodstock Festival and Carnegie Hall.
