Anne-Sophie Mutter Information
Anne-Sophie Mutter (June 29, 1963) is a German violinist. She was born in Rheinfelden, Baden-Wurttemberg. At the age of five, she had already started to play the piano, and shortly afterward, she took over the violin. She was inspired by the violinists such as Wilhelm Furtwangler and Yehudi Mehuhin. Mutter soon started to gain attention for her performances. Mutter then stopped going to school and decided to pursue music full-time. In 1976, she made her public debut at the Lucerne Festival, playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major. At the time, Mutter was only thirteen years old.
Mutter made her American debut in 1980 with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. She became an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (London) in 1985 while she was only 22. She went on a grand tour in 1988, visiting the United States and Canada. Mutter owns two Stradivarius violins, including Raven Stradivarius of 1710 and The Emiliani of 1703.
Mutter has received several awards and recognitions for her brilliant performances and records throughout her career. In 2000, she received a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance. She also received the Polar Music Prize in 2019. Herbert von Karajan supported Mutter in her career. She has also composed several works by John Williams, Wolfgang Rihm, Andre Previn, Krzysztof Penderecki, Norbert Moret, Witold Lutoslawski, Sofia Gubaidulina, Henri Dutelliux, and Sebastian Currier.
