Ann Patchett Information
Ann Patchett (December 2, 1963) is an American author born in Los Angeles, California. Her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, when she was six years old. Patchett attended St. Bernard Academy, which was a private Catholic school for girls, and later attended Sarah Lawrence College. Eventually, Ann Patchett attended the Iowa Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She wrote her first novel, named The Patron Saint of Liars, during her time in the Fine Arts Work Center. Patchett co-founded the bookstore called Parnassus Books with Karen Hayes, which opened in November 2011.
The first published work by Patchett was in The Paris Review, a story that she published before she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College. She worked for Seventeen Magazine for almost nine years. Patchett primarily wrote non-fiction. The magazine published one out of every five articles she wrote. Throughout her career, Patchett has written for several notable publications, including Vogue, GQ, Gourmet, ELLE, The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker. She published The Patron Saint of Liars in 1992.
Patchett’s second novel entitled “Taft” won the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize in 1994. In 1997, she released her third novel entitled The Magician’s Assistant. A breakthrough came in Patchett’s career when her fourth novel “Bel Canto” became a finalist National Book Critics Circle Award. She won the PEN/Faulkner Award. Patchett has been the editor of the anthology series’s volume, The Best American Short Stories, in 2006.
