Amy Hanaiali?i Gilliom is a vocalist and songwriter famous for her quality of reinvigorating the Hawaiian tradition of female falsetto singing. During her childhood, Gilliom’s family was involved with the Maui Youth Theater, now known as the Maui Academy of Performing Arts. Gilliom is known to carry the legacy of her grandmother Jennie Napua Woodd, who performed in New York City’s famed Lexington Hotel in the 1930s.
Native Child was the first album by Gilliom, released in 1995, followed by her second album entitled “Hawaiian Tradition,” released in 1997. Generation Hawaii is a hit album by Gillioms that won four Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 2007 for the categories of Hawaiian Album of the Year, Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Best Engineered Album.
Gilliom was one of the five finalists shortlisted for the 2006 Grammy Award. She recorded, toured, and performed for several years with fellow Hawaiian music artist Willie K., also the producer of her first hit album, “Hawaiian Tradition.” The two enjoyed a personal relationship until 2001. In 2014, Gilliom announced that a forthcoming recording, “Reunion,” with Willie K., would be released soon.
