American Spiritual Ensemble Information
Dr. Everett McCorvey founded the American Spiritual Ensemble (ASE) in 1995. He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and witnessed the power of music’s storytelling during the Civil Rights Movement. The idea of powerful storytelling via music to comfort people and change their lives became the reason for ASE’s inception. The ensemble began as a dream to honor and maintain the music pioneered by African enslaved people.
The group works to preserve and continue the tradition of storytelling with outstanding performances. The arrangements serve as a tribute to those lives that were lost during slavery, while the songs performed are a combination of American, African, and European traditions.
Being a critically-acclaimed ensemble, ASE is highly dedicated to performing provocative and dynamic concerts all across the globe. The group participates in a variety of concert formats such as Spirituals, Broadway, and Jazz. The majority of the members working as part of ASE have performed in such venues as the New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Atlanta Civic Opera, and Boston Opera. The team has also performed abroad in Germany, Italy, England, Japan, Scotland, and Spain. The songs performed by the American Spiritual Ensemble became sources of comfort, communication, faith, direction, and hope for the suffering of humanity.
