Amadou and Mariam Information
Amadou & Mariam are a duo from Mali. The current lineup consists of Mariam Doumbia (vocals) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals). The pair's early albums from the 1980s and 1990s featured simple guitar and vocal arrangements. Amadou & Mariam have been releasing music since the late '90s that incorporates elements of rock guitars, Syrian violins, trumpets, Egyptian ney, Indian tablas, and Dogon percussion into the traditional sound of Mali. The term "Afro-blues" has been coined to describe the result of this fusion.
In 1985, the duo had already achieved fame as performers of traditional Malian blues. Their trip to Burkina Faso had officially begun. Several cassette albums were created after the couple relocated to Côte d'Ivoire in 1986. After meeting Stevie Wonder, the duo began performing at festivals worldwide.
In 1996, after signing with Polygram's Emarcy label, the pair relocated to Paris. Sou Ni Tile, their first album recorded in a location other than Africa, was released in 1998. The album sold a hundred thousand copies because of the success of the single "Je pense à toi" on French radio. Their 2004 album Dimanche à Bamako ("Sunday in Bamako") was produced by World-Latin music singer Manu Chao, who was contacted by the band in 2003.
CDs of the Côte d'Ivoire recordings from 1990–1995: Le Meilleur Des Années Maliennes were released for the first time in 2005 as a limited edition box set. Dimanche à Bamako, by Amadou & Mariam, was awarded the French Victoire de la Musique for Best World Music album of the year.
