Alarm Will Sound Information
The 20-piece chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound plays and records only modern classical music. Members of the Eastman School of Music's new music group Ossia who graduated in 1996, formed Alarm Will Sound. On May 24, 2001, the group gave their debut performance, at which they played Steve Reich's Tehillim and The Desert Music with Ossia.
They were Dickinson College's resident musical artists from 2004 to 2007. In 2006, Alarm Will Sound received the Concert Music Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) in recognition of "the virtuosity, passion, and commitment with which they play and promote the repertory for the 21st century."
Acoustica, released in 2005 by Alarm Will Sound, comprises acoustic versions of music by Aphex Twin, following two recordings of Steve Reich's work in 2001 and 2002. Nonesuch Records issued their CD a/rhythmia in 2009, which features a wide variety of rhythmically difficult compositions by composers such as Benedict Mason, Michael Gordon, György Ligeti, Mochipet, Johannes Ciconia, Conlon Nancarrow, Harrison Birtwistle, Josquin des Prez, and Autechre.
In 2010, they partnered with Dirty Projectors to reimagine The Getty Address as a live performance piece, premiering it at Lincoln Center, Disney Hall, and the Barbican Centre. Matt Marks, Alan Pierson, and Chris Thompson translated and arranged the music that Dirty Projectors frontman Dave Longstreth had originally composed on a computer using painstakingly complex sampling, looping, and layering for the 23 players in both bands.
