Alabama Ballet Information
The Alabama Ballet is an American ballet company that is based in Alabama. Before the company was established, there were only three smaller ballet companies working in Alabama. This includes Ballet Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Ballet, and the Birmingham Civic Ballet. Two dancers started the Alabama Ballet company in 1981, named Thor Sutowski and Sonia Arova. They decided to start a bona fide ballet company in the state, and that’s how Alabama Ballet came into existence. Almost fifteen years later, in 1996, Roger Van Fleteren and Wes Chapman became co-directors of the company.
A decade later, in 2005, Tracey Alvey became the first Ballet Mistress, and just two years later, she became Artistic Director. Van Fleteren became Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer after Chapman left the ballet company. Leslie Fillmer serves as a music composer for the Alabama Ballet.
There is also an annual performance held for the Alabama Ballet named, The Nutcracker, which George Balanchine choreographed. It is undoubtedly one of only six ballet companies globally that have the license to perform, The Nutcracker. Alabama Ballet has also performed the choreographic renditions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula.
Alabama Ballet has been organizing a summer residency in Gorham’s Bluff, Alabama, since 1997, in conjunction with Gorham Bluff’s Institute. It overlooks the Tennessee River Valley. The ballet company also runs a school for children ranging from ages 3 to 18.
