Agnes Obel Information
Agnes Carolina Thaarup Obel (October 28, 1980) is a Danish musician, singer, and songwriter. She was born in Gentofte, Denmark, and learned to play the piano at a very young age. While she was still a child, Obel found inspiration in the music of Jan Johansson, which left a strong influence on Agnes’ music. She joined a small band in 1990 as a bass guitar player and singer. The group also appeared in a few small festivals and recorded a few pieces.
Obel got an opportunity in 1994 to have a small part in the short film entitled “The Boy Who Walked Backwards/Drengen der gik baglean” by Thomas Vinterberg. Her brother, Holger Thaarup, played the main character in the movie. She began her solo career in 2010 with the release of her debut album entitled “Philharmonics.” All the material for the album was self-written, self-recorded, self-played, and self-produced. Every song except “Close Watch” was an original work for the album. Obel has worked with different record labels throughout her career, including PIAS Recordings, Deutsche Records, and Grammophon/Universal Classics Records.
Obel’s notable singles are “Riverside” (2010), “Just So” (2010), “Brother Sparrow” (2011), “The Curse” (2013), “Fuel to Fire” (2013), “Familiar” (2016), “Golden Green” (2016), and “Island of Doom” (2019). She released three more notable studio albums after releasing Philharmonics that include Aventine (September 30, 2013), Citizen of Glass (October 21, 2016), and Mypia (February 21, 2020).
