Afro-Cuban All Stars Information
In early 1996, Ry Cooder was asked to join an experiment fusing Cuban and African musicians by Nick Gold the head of World Circuit Records. Rubén González had been chosen as the pianist after a group of Cuban musicians had already been recruited. Unfortunately, recording Cuban music took precedence after visa issues prevented the African artists from participating.
Gold and Juan de Marcos González (formerly the tres player of Sierra Maestra) put together the first album by the Afro-Cuban All Stars in March 1996. It was titled A Toda Cuba le Gusta and featured Rubén González (piano), Orlando "Cachato" López (bass), and a large ensemble of veteran Cuban musicians and singers whose careers date back to the 1950s Havana scene, including Ibrahim
Cooder played slide guitar on the tune "Alto Songo," and the album was recorded in April 1996, using studio time that had been left over from the sessions that had produced the previous two albums. Two days were all it took to record Rubén González live and without any overdubs. After Wim Wenders' documentary Buena Vista Social Club was released in early 1998, Cuban performers gained international acclaim.
