Acereros de Monclova Information
Formerly known as the Mineros de Coahuila, the Acereros de Monclova (Monclova Steelers) made their Mexican League début on March 23, 1974, at "Sports Park Ahmsa," taking on the Indios de Ciudad Juárez. Tomás "Sergeant Shrapnel" Herrera oversaw the group. On March 16, 1975, the Mineros played the Alijadores de Tampico in their first encounter at the brand-new Monclova Stadium.
For the first time, the squad made it to the postseason in 1976, but they were promptly swept out of the tournament by Juárez. The club, managed by Victor Favela, became known as Acereros de Monclova in 1980. The Northern Zone's third-place finishers, the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos, eliminated them from playoff contention with a 4-0 victory. The 203 runs scored by the 1986 Steelers was also a new high for the franchise and tied their mark for most home runs in a game.
They completed the regular season with a 7651 record, five games ahead of the Sultanes de Monterrey in the North Division. However, after sweeping Dos Laredos in six games in the first round of the playoffs, they were swept by the Sultanes in seven games in the North Division Championship Series. In 1987, Monclova won a five-game series against Monterrey before losing a similar series to the Tecolotes. Once again, the Tecolotes eliminated Monclova from the 1990 postseason first round.
