The Imperial Theatre is a Broadway theatre that is located in Manhattan, New York. The theatre has a seating capacity of approximately 1,417 and is the fiftieth venue of The Shubert Organization. They constructed the venue to replace the Lyric Theatre. Herbert J. Krapp designed the venue, and it was explicitly designed to accommodate musical theatre productions.
The Imperial Theatre opened for the public on December 25, 1923, with the debut production being Oscar Hammerstein II-Vincent Youmans’ “Mary Jane McKane.” The venue has since hosted numerous notable musicals such as Les Miserables (1990), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1985), Dreamgirls (1981), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), and Get Your Gun (1946).
There is a long list of composers and lyricists of the 20th century who have performed at the Imperial Theatre, such as Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Merrill, Lionel Bart, Frank Loesser, Harold Rome, Irving Berlin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, and Cole Porter.
