Twelfth Night Information
William Shakespeare's romantic comedy, Twelfth Night, or What You Will, was composed in 1601 or 1602 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment to mark the end of the Christmas season. Viola and her brother Sebastian are separated from each other after a shipwreck and become the focus of the drama. Viola (in his Cesario guise) falls for Duke Orsino, who has his heart set on Countess Olivia. Countess Olivia initially mistakes Viola for a male and falls in love with her.
Elements of the plot were taken from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, which in turn was based on a story by Matteo Bandello, and the play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder anticipated for the occasion. The first known public performance took place on February 2, 1602, for Candlemas, the official conclusion of Christmastide. The drama was released in the First Folio in 1623.
