Meredith Willson composed the music and lyrics for The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which Richard Morris wrote. Margaret Brown, a survivor of the RMS Titanic, and her affluent miner-husband are romanticized in the storyline. In 1964, a musical film adaptation, also titled The Unsinkable Molly Brown, was released, with a script by Helen Deutsch.
The original Broadway production debuted on November 3, 1960, at the Winter Garden Theatre and ran for 532 performances and one preview before closing on February 10, 1962. It was choreographed by Peter Gennaro and directed by Dore Schary. Tammy Grimes, Harve Presnell, and Jack Harrold were among the first cast members. The Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical went to Grimes. In 1962, Grimes went on a nationwide tour in the United States, stopping in Los Angeles and San Francisco in April and June.
Presnell recreated his stage performance in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a 1964 film starring Debbie Reynolds and similarly named The Unsinkable Molly Brown. In 1989-1990, the two starred in a nationwide tour. In May 2009, the first West End production, starring Abi Finley and Sean Pol McGreevy, debuted. "I Ain't Down Yet" became a well-known standard. Dinah Shore, Lester Lanin and his Orchestra, and John Gary were among the musicians who recorded it in 1961, 1962, and 1966.
