On October 29, 1933, Henry T. Rainey, a Democrat from Illinois and Speaker of the House, addressed the audience at Blair Junior High's auditorium to discuss the finer aspects of the New Deal. Since then, The Norfolk Forum has consistently hosted at least four speakers per year. Actors and advice columnists rotate with heads of state, while journalists and the politicians they cover.
They take pride that a long list of notable people has graced their stage, including Margaret Thatcher, Alex Haley, Ogden Nash, Vincent Price, Bill Moyers, and Pearl Bailey. Others include Will Durant, Russell Baker, Barbara Walters, Ken Burns, Cokie Roberts, Ross Perot, Tom Wolfe, Dave Barry, George Bush, Jane Goodall, and Mark Russell.
The speakers have aroused, amused, inspired, provoked, and amazed us for 80 years, including philosophers, educators, consumer advocates, authors, historians, futurists, judges, musical revues, ambassadors, financial wizards, rocket scientists, war correspondents, foreign affairs experts, film critics, a self-described spy, and even a con man. So things stand today. The Norfolk Forum is now the nation's oldest publicly-subscribed speakers' forum.
