Duncan Sheik composed the music for the coming-of-age rock musical Spring Awakening, while Steven Sater wrote the lyrics and book. The German play Spring Awakening, written by Frank Wedekind in 1891, served as its inspiration. The musical follows a group of adolescents as they navigate the emotional and physical highs and lows of coming of age in late nineteenth-century Germany. The folk-infused rock soundtrack of the musical features elements of alternative rock.
Opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006, the initial Broadway production of Spring Awakening followed its conception in the late 1990s by going through numerous workshops, concerts, revisions, and an Off-Broadway debut. Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr. were all part of the cast, while choreography was done by Bill T. Jones and directed by Michael Mayer. Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and Featured Actor were among the eight Tonys bestowed upon the first Broadway run.
The original Broadway run was so successful that it inspired other stage adaptations worldwide. These included numerous productions in the United States. This West End production took home four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and a string of shows in other countries. The documentary film Spring Awakening: Those You've Known, which followed the original company's reunion after 15 years, premiered on HBO in 2022.
