Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee (March 20, 1957) is an American, producer, professor, actor, screenwriter, and film director. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and now owns a production, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks that has so far produced more than 35 films since 1983. Lee made his first student film titled “Last Hustle in Brooklyn” while he was attending a historically black college, Morehouse College. After that, he went to Clark Atlanta University, where he took film courses.
Lee released an independent film named “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads.” It was his student film that was showcased in Lincoln Center’s New Directors/New Films Festival. He then began working on his feature film “She’s Gotta Have It.” Lee spent a budget of $175,000 on shooting his directorial debut in two weeks, but the film made $7 million at the United States box office, released in 1986.
