San Francisco Ballet Information
The San Francisco Opera's founder, Gaetano Merola, who also saw a need for a school to train dancers to appear in opera productions, founded the San Francisco Ballet School in 1933. It was established as part of the San Francisco Operatic and Ballet School. Christensen's ability to serve in both capacities was tested as the San Francisco Opera Ballet's touring schedule grew.
Before 2015, students aged 6 and 7 were only accepted into the School's Pre-ballet program. In 2015, the age range of the pre-ballet program was widened to accommodate four- and five-year-olds. There is no audition for pre-ballet, but space is limited.
Children participate in weekly courses where they learn the fundamentals of ballet, how to align their bodies properly, and how to express themselves musically. To continue their studies after finishing the program, students of age must audition to enter Level 1 of the San Francisco Ballet School.
The academic year at the school runs from September to June, with lower levels having sessions twice weekly and upper levels having classes five or six times weekly. Students who are at a higher level academically are required to attend classes throughout the regular school day, with many needing to rearrange their schedules to do so.
