Once On This Island Information
Once on This Island is a one-act musical with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The story is about a girl who lives in Tropical Island and brings people together of different classes by using the power of love. Originally, it was staged at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons from May 6, 1990, to May 27, 1990. On October 18, 1990, the Broadway production opened at the Booth Theatre and after 19 previews and 469 performances, it closed on December 1, 1991.
In 1995, the play won Lawrence Olivie Award for Best New Musical. On December 3, 2017, it was revived in a Broadway Production at Circle in the Square Theatre.
Once On This Island was directed and choreographed by Graciela Daniele. The cast included Sheila Gibbs as Mama Euralie, Afi McClendon as Little Ti Moune, LaChanze as Ti Moune, Gerry McIntyre as Armand, Jerry Dixon as Daniel, Ellis E. Williams as Tonton Julian, Kecia Lewis as Asaka, Andrea Frierson as Erzulie, Milton Craig Nealy as Agwe, and Eric Riley as Papa Ge. The original cast reunited in 2002 with special guest Lillias White to perform the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund and the show for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Birmingham Rep hosted the European premiere in 1994. In 1991, the musical was revived at Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, and the Hackney Empire Theatre in London. On December 3, 2017, it was revived in a Broadway Production at Circle in the Square Theatre.
The opening night cast included Isaac Powell as Daniel, Phillip Boykin as Tonton Julian, Hailey Kilgore as Ti Moune, Kenita R. Miller as Mama Euralie, Lea Salonga as Erzulie, Alex Newell as Asaka, Quentin Earl Darrington as Agwe, Alysha Deslorieux as Andrea, David Jennings as Armand, and Merle Dandridge as Papa Ge.
