Jana Robbins Information
Jana Robbins (April 18, 1947) is an American actress, producer, speaker, teacher, and director. She was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania as a daughter of Phillip and Edythe Eisenberg. She was encouraged by her mother and began performing in recitals at the Gene Kelly Studio of Dance. She got her first solo at the age of 6. Robbins used to sing in her father’s The Golden Key Restaurant and Lounge at the age of 16. Robbins starred in many different school productions in her high school. In 1967, she earned a BFA in Theater from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.
Robbins attended the Man of La Mancha, which was her first New York City theater production at the age of 21. Within a year, she was sighted as Aldonza in the Broadway National Tour. Good News was her Broadway tribute in which she appeared as Patricia Bingham and standby for Alice Fay as Professor Kenyon. In 1975, she also toured as The Leader in Zorba, and the next year, Robbins appeared in “Tickles by Tucholsky” Off-Broadway. She also played Louise in Gypsy at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn that year.
Some of the other Broadway productions include Cleo and Monica in I Love My Wife, Lenny McGrath in Crimes of the Heart, Romance, Romance, and 1989 Broadway revival of Gypsy. Robbins began her career as a producer in 1995. She directed, produced, and developed The Participant in association with Chazz Palminteri.
Jana Robbins has earned many awards and honors throughout her career including Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Revival of a Musical,” New York Outer Critics Circle Award for “Best Revival of a Musical,” Olivier Award for Company (2018), and Tree of Life Award Jewish National Fund (2005).
