Jamie Metzl Information
Jamie Frederic Metzl (July 1, 1968) is an American geopolitical commentator, author, and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. He is also a former partner of Cranemere LLC, a worldwide investment firm. For high school, he went to The Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri. He is a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude from Brown University. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a J.D. and a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian history from Oxford University in 1994.
Metzl served on the National Security Council as director of multilateral and humanitarian affairs, as well as deputy staff director and senior counselor to the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, senior coordinator for international public information, and senior advisor to the undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs at the Department of State. Metzl worked as a human rights officer for the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) from 1991 to 1993. He assisted in establishing a Cambodian human rights investigation and monitoring unit.
Metzl oversaw a Council on Foreign Relations report led by Warren B. Rudman in 2003, which found that the U.S. was not doing enough to train first responders for a catastrophic assault. He spoke on the subject of Meet the Press.
He has appeared as a commentator on BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, and Fox News Channel, among other outlets in the United States and abroad. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, and other journals. He is the author of a book on human rights in Southeast Asia and the novel The Depths of the Sea.
